Description

Eastwood Hall is a house dating to the late 17th century, with possible earlier fabric in the west wing. An east wing was added in 1841, marked by the initials T.W. on the rainwater head. The construction is of coursed rubble stone, with roughly-squared stone in the east wing, and cut stone dressings. The roofs are graduated Lakeland slate, except for Welsh slates on the east wing. The east wing is built in a free Tudor style.

The south elevation has two storeys plus attics. The late 17th century main block is three bays wide. A lower, pent, one-bay section to the left forms the front of a longer wing, which is wider at the rear. To the right is a one-bay, cross-gabled wing dated 1841. The main block features a studded, flush-panelled door set under a segmental arch within a stone surround with moulded imposts and a keystone. Twelve-pane sash windows are set within architraves on the lower floors, with a single stone-surrounded attic window above the door. The eaves were heightened in the 19th century. Coped gables sit on moulded kneelers, with a stepped and corniced ridge and end stacks. A two-storey, pent projection to the left has an old half-glazed door, a three-pane overlight, and a twelve-pane sash window above; it is finished with coping and moulded kneelers. The projecting right wing exhibits a chamfered plinth, a three-light transomed window, a two-light window to the first floor, and a small lancet window set under a coped gable with moulded kneelers and a finial.

The right return shows a narrow, recessed centre bay with a half-glazed leaded door and overlight beneath a quatrefoil window. A two-light transomed window sits beneath a corbelled-out gabled half-dormer on the left. The cross-gabled right bay has a four-light bay window with an embattled parapet, a two-light first-floor window, and a small attic lancet. The roof has a stepped and corniced ridge and a right-end stack.

The rear elevation displays a gabled service wing with paired twelve-pane sashes under nine-pane casements. To the right is an arched stair window with a radially glazed head in a stone surround. The far right west wing features irregular long quoins.

Inside, the west ground-floor room has a fireplace with a moulded stone surround and a fluted keystone. The open-well stone staircase has 19th-century turned balusters. The first floor of the older part of the house has two-panel doors throughout and moulded stone fireplaces. The east wing has Gothic stone-panelled fireplaces on the ground floor. The west wing contains a large 18th-century corniced stone fireplace and a newel stair at the front.
