Description
The churchyard wall surrounding the old Church of St. Mary dates from the 18th century or earlier. It is constructed of coursed rubble and features a flat slab coping. The wall stands approximately 1.2 metres high on three sides of the rectangular churchyard, with a lower retaining wall along the riverbank to the east. Near the west end of the south wall, there are two monolith piers that support a wrought-iron gate, which has looped bars and knob-topped dogbars. To the immediate east of the gate, there is a stone stile. At the time of the survey, the wall was in poor condition, partly due to the removal of re-set medieval cross slabs. The wall is included for its group value.
