Description
No. 4 Percy Street is a house that has been converted into a shop and offices. It was originally built around 1766-1770 and was refronted and heightened around 1900. The building is constructed of brick, with a front made of faience featuring colored patterning from the 1900 alterations. It has a slate mansard roof with brick end stacks and stands four storeys tall with an attic.
The facade has three windows and features a moulded cornice above an altered shopfront from around 1900. This shopfront includes four semicircular arches over late 20th-century shop windows, with a late 20th-century door to the right. The first and second floors have square-headed windows, including two 19th-century sashes on the left, which are set beneath colored faience semicircular arched tympanum arches. The third floor has horned nine-pane sashes beneath similar segmental-headed tympanum arches and a coved cornice. The flat-roofed dormers feature colored nine-pane sashes and moulded cornices. The rear of the building has sashes as well.
Inside, there is a fine mid-18th-century open-well staircase with a wreathed handrail and turned balusters set on an open string, along with a moulded wall string and dado rail. The stair hall and first-floor rooms are adorned with fine enriched cornicing.
