Description

This is a terrace house located in Rathbone Place, Westminster, built around 1718-1720 and significantly altered in the early to mid-19th century. The building is constructed of stock brick with a slate roof, and stands four storeys high with a three-window frontage. A mid-19th century shop front features a curved display window and an angled shop door, creating an open lobby. The right-hand wall of this lobby retains original fielded panelling and a segmental arched niche, which is part of the original passage hall. The upper floors have stucco-panelled architraves to the sash windows, with the first-floor windows having pediments supported by consoles. A cornice and blocking course run along the top of the building.

Inside, the house retains many original features based on a standard two-room deep plan with a rear closet wing. The panelling from the passage hall continues into the lobby, featuring another segmental arched niche and a single fluted Corinthian pilaster that opened onto the staircase. The staircase compartment is fully panelled and decorated with carved bracket strings. It has three twisted balusters per tread, fluted column newels, and a simpler turned baluster to the second flight. The first-floor landing features a panelled window seat and shutters. The first floor rooms preserve fielded panelling and dado rails, with box cornices to the rear rooms and angled chimney pieces. The second-floor rooms have plainer, sunk panelling and box cornices. Original door furniture is also present throughout.
