Description
No. 13 Soho Square is a terrace house that was rebuilt in 1768-69, following its original construction immediately after 1677, with mid-19th century alterations. The building is faced with stucco and topped with a slate roof, standing three storeys high with a mansard attic and featuring three windows across its front.
The ground floor has an altered early to mid-19th century shop front, which includes a display window flanked by doorways that have panelled and glazed doors with rectangular fanlights above. The fascia is adorned with a dentil cornice, consoles, and pendant festoons. The upper floors feature recessed sash windows with later 19th century glazing set in architraves that have pediments on the first floor. A cornice and parapet with an open work balustrade complete the exterior.
Inside, notable features include a stone staircase from 1768-69, which has a delicate wrought iron balustrade and a gallery on the top floor that leads to a compartment under a roof light, decorated with a frieze of festoons and roundels. The rear first-floor room boasts a decorated plaster ceiling and a canted bay window that extends to the rear. There is also some panelling on the first floor and various enriched modillion cornices. Additionally, spiral balusters and panelled newels from around 1677 have been recessed above the basement stairs.
