Description

Nos. 4, 5 and 6 Soho Square, including No. 6 Dean Street, is a building that was originally constructed as a warehouse between 1801 and 1805 and later converted into offices. In 1816, the owner altered it for use as "Trotter's Bazaar," and the current shop front was added in 1889. The building is made of stock brick with a stone-faced ground floor and has a slate roof. It stands four storeys tall with a basement and is seven windows wide.

The ground floor features the 1889 shop front, which includes a segmental pedimented doorway located in the second bay from the left. This façade is articulated in 7½ bays by Doric pilasters that support an entablature with a dentil cornice. The upper floors have recessed sash windows with late 19th-century glazing, set beneath flat gauged red brick arches. A stucco cornice and blocking course complete the upper façade, while late 19th-century cast iron area railings adorn the front.

The rear elevation facing Dean Street likely reflects either Trotter's original warehouse from 1801 to 1804 or the alterations made for the Bazaar in 1816. This elevation is also constructed of stock brick with slight stone dressings, standing three storeys high and featuring three widely spaced windows. The ground floor is arcaded with segmental arches that rise from stone impost blocks on plain piers, with the central archway providing access for goods. The left and right bays contain a recessed sash window and a doorway flanked by sidelights and a radial glazed fanlight. The central goods passage has semicircular arched doorways on either side, with panelled reveals and soffits, sidelights, radial fanlights, and panelled doors. The upper floors are adorned with wide recessed tripartite glazing bar sashes beneath finely gauged segmental arches, a painted stone plat band on the first floor, and a parapet with coping.
