Description

37 Soho Square is a terrace house on a corner site, built around 1766 with alterations made in the early and mid-19th century. The building is constructed of reddened brick with a slate roof. It is four storeys high, with a basement and dormered mansard. It has three windows facing Soho Square, and five windows on its return frontage to Carlisle Street, featuring a central canted bay. The ground floor has a shop front dating to the early 19th century, characterised by a frame of four engaged Greek fluted Doric columns supporting an entablature. Three mid-20th century windows are set within, with the central window replacing a former doorway. The current entrance is located to the right of the canted bay on the return frontage, within an architraved case which is likely not its original position. Upper floors facing the square have recessed sash windows set within 19th century stucco architraves. A brick plat band sits above the first floor, and a large stone modillion cornice supports a balustraded parapet. The return frontage features architraved sashes, brick plat bands, and a plain parapet with coping.

The interior, while altered, retains several original features. These include a stone staircase at the back of the hall, against the party wall, with a wrought iron balustrade of an S-scroll pattern. The ground floor front room has an enriched cornice and a mid-18th century chimney piece. The main room on the first floor features fine, albeit incomplete, Rococo plasterwork to the ceiling, along with an enriched cornice. The remaining doorcases and furniture are principally from the early 19th century, aside from an 18th-century pedimented doorway leading to the first-floor landing.
