Description
No. 2 Soho Square is a terrace house built around 1735 by carpenter John Sanger. It is constructed of stock brick and features a slate roof. The building stands four storeys high and is three windows wide. The ground floor has an entrance on the left, which includes a five-panel door and a semicircular fanlight set within panelled reveals and soffit. This entrance is framed by a doorcase supported by Doric columns, dosserets, and an open mutule pediment. To the right, there is a pilastered display window with an entablature that was added in the late 19th century. The upper floors, with the top floor being an early 19th-century addition, have recessed sash windows with 19th-century glazing, all set beneath flat gauged arches. The original first-floor sill band has been altered due to the lowering of the sills. The building features a parapet with coping.
Inside, there is a central stairwell between the main rooms and a closet beyond. The hall includes corniced doorcases, and the rear ground floor room has niches with finely carved shell-heads flanking a pair of carved scrolls that once framed a fireplace. The staircase has a cut string design with two turned balusters per tread, column newels, and a swept handrail with a bold curtail; the balustrade above the first floor has been renewed. The interior also boasts enriched cornices and doorcases.
