Description
No. 90 Dean Street is a corner terrace house built between 1756 and 1767. It is constructed from stock brick and features shallow rusticated stucco work on the ground floor, with vermiculated quoins and a slate roof. The building rises four tall storeys above a basement and has three windows across the front, with a four-window return to Carlisle Street.
The doorway is positioned to the right and features a deeply recessed panelled door with a semicircular fanlight, set within a wooden doorcase that reflects an earlier Georgian style. This doorcase is adorned with engaged Roman Doric columns, triglyph dosserets, and an open pediment. Above the doorway is a small rectangular hall lay light with an oval "cobweb" glazing pattern.
The windows are recessed square-headed sash types with glazing bars. The first-floor windows are framed in stucco architraves with cornices, and the central window has a pediment above it. The second-floor windows have flat gauged arches, while the attic storey features coarse segmental arches and has been partly rebuilt. A sill course runs along the first floor, and there is a stucco cornice above the second floor, topped by a parapet with coping. The return side of the building is austere, with a pair of blind windows on the right.
Inside, notable features include a hall with Doric pilastered archivolted and keyed archways, one leading to the stairs and another (blocked) to the front room. The spacious stair compartment has closed rising dog leg stairs with waisted balusters and columnar newels, illuminated by original sash windows with panelled shutters and heavy architraves. The first floor is further enhanced with enriched cornices.
