Description
No. 6 Carlisle Street is a terrace house built in the late 17th century, with alterations from the 18th and 19th centuries. It features stock brick construction with a stucco ground floor and a slate roof. The building has four storeys and a basement, with a two-window width. To the right, there is a square-headed doorway that contains a six-panel door and a fanlight, while the ground floor window has been altered. The upper floors are fitted with recessed glazing bar sashes set beneath flat gauged arches. A stuccoed plat band runs along the first floor, and there is a parapet with coping at the top. Inside, the house retains partially intact panelling and box cornices, along with a panelled pilaster arched opening leading to the stairwell, which features a closed string stair with turned balusters that are partly boxed in. This house was the residence of John Christopher Smith, who served as Handel's amanuensis from 1756 to 1763, as noted by a plaque from the Greater London Council.
