Description

Nos 38 and 38A are a corner terrace house located on Soho Square, built in 1735 and reconstructed by carpenter John Sanger. The building has been altered in the late 18th century and 19th century. It features stock brick construction and a slate roof, standing four storeys tall with a basement and a dormered mansard. The front facing the square has three windows, while the return to Carlisle Street has five windows and a central canted bay.

The entrance to the return is under a porch supported by Doric columns, which also supports the canted bay. The ground floor facing the square has an attractive early to mid-19th century shop front with a central doorway framed by engaged Corinthian columns, topped with an entablature and a modillion cornice. The doorway and fanlight feature ornamented spandrels, and the flanking windows were added in the later 19th century. The corner window is curved and returns for one bay to Carlisle Street.

The upper floors have recessed sash windows with later 19th century glazing, set under flat gauged red brick arches. A moulded brick band runs above the third floor, and there is a parapet with a cornice canopy that returns to Carlisle Street. The canted bay rises from the porch to the second floor, topped with parapet coping.
