Description

TQ 2981 SE CITY OF WESTMINSTER SOHO SQUARE, W1 58/17 24.2.58 Nos 38 and 38A GV II Corner terrace house. Fabric of 1735, a rebuild by John Sanger, carpenter, altered late C18 and C19. Stock brick, slate roof. 4 storeys, basement and dormered mansard. 3 windows front to square and 5 window wide return to Carlisle Street with central canted bay. Entrance to return under porch formed by Doric columns supporting canted bay. Ground floor of square front has good early to mid C19 shop front with central doorway and wooden framework of engaged Corinthian columns with entablature and modillion cornice, the doorway and fanlight with ornamented spandrels later C19 work as are flanking windows; curve splayed to corner and returned for one. bay to Carlisle Street. Upper floors have recessed sashes, later C19 glazing, under flat gauged red brick arches. Moulded brick band over 3rd floor and parapet with cornice canopy returned to Carlisle Street where the canted bay rises from porch to 2nd floor with parapet coping. Survey of London; Vol. XXXIII.
