Description
No. 17 Colliergate is a house that has been converted into a shop. It dates from the mid-18th century but was rebuilt at the front in the late 19th century. The front is made of red brick laid in Flemish bond, while the rear is rendered. The building has a slate roof.
The exterior features a three-storey, two-window front. The shopfront is framed by sunk-panel pilasters and has a moulded dentilled cornice supported by console brackets. There are plate glass windows over sunk-panel risers on either side of glazed and panelled double doors, which are set within an eared architrave topped with a fluted frieze and a moulded cornice lintel, all beneath a deep overlight. The upper floor windows are segment-arched one-pane sashes with stone sills. The rear of the building has a three-storey, two-window gable wall with one-pane sashes on each floor.
Inside, there is a tiled floor in the stairhall. An original open string staircase features fluted column balusters, foliate scrolled tread ends, and a ramped-up handrail leading to the first floor. The flight to the higher floors has slender turned balusters. The ground and first floor front rooms still have their original moulded cornices.
