Description
21 Colliergate is a house located in York, dating from the early 18th century but with earlier origins. It has undergone alterations in the mid-19th century and 20th century. The earlier structure is timber-framed and is now encased in orange-pink brick, featuring a front in Flemish bond and a rear in random bond. The roof is slate with brick gable coping and a brick stack.
The exterior is three stories high with a one-window gabled front. On the left, there is a square-headed pilastered opening that contains a recessed six-panel passage door and a part-glazed shop door. To the right, there is a small-pane shop window in a fluted surround beneath a full-width cornice. The first and second floor windows are 12-pane sashes with stone sills and flat arches made of brick. At the rear, there is a three-story one-window gable wall with a 12-pane sash window featuring a flat arch on the second floor. The left return shows a studded second-floor party wall visible within No. 22.
Inside, there is a full-height open string staircase with shaped tread ends, stick balusters, turned newels, and a serpentine moulded handrail.
