Description
No 78 on Clapham Common South Side is a house dated 1888, designed in a freely-treated Tudor style with some classical details that may hint at Elizabethan features. The building has two storeys and an attic. The ground floor is made of red brick with an irregular darker pattern, while the upper part is covered with fishscale tiles. It features high pitched tiled roofs adorned with fishscale bands, fancy ridge tiles, and elaborate terra-cotta finials.
The main front has two bays, with the left bay being gabled and featuring a two-storey projecting square bay. There is a pedimented entrance followed by an octagonal tower on the right, topped with a spire-like roof. The right side of the house displays three closely-set gables in the center and varying roof heights from left to right. This side also includes a roll-moulded Tudor-arched entrance with a label above it. The eaves and door decorations are made of moulded brick, and there are good wrought iron screens at the door and ground floor windows.
