Description
This milestone, likely erected in 1745, was taken over by the Epsom, Ewell and Tooting Turnpike Trust in 1755. It is made of limestone and features a carved pillar with a square-section shaft and a pyramidal cap. The front (south-east) face displays the inscription: ROYAL/ EXCHANGE/ 5/ MILES, along with an Ordnance Survey benchmark below it. The north-east face has the inscription: WHITEHALL/ 4 ½ / MILES. The south-west face also has an inscription that is partly eroded but likely reads: WHITEHALL/ 4 ½ / MILES.
