Description
Clapham South Station, built in 1926 by Charles Holden, is a London Underground station located on Balham Hill. The building is made of Portland stone and features an astylar corner design with a canted front. There are three entrances at street level, each with a moulded overall lintel and canopy. Although the original projecting roundel signs have been removed, the ticket hall is partly illuminated from above and retains its original wall tiling and trabeated ceiling, although modern escalators have been added. The sub-surface platforms and passages still showcase their original tiled decoration and many of the original signs. A block of flats constructed above the station building is not considered of special interest. Clapham South is one of several stations designed by Holden for the Northern Line extension.
