Description

This milestone, likely placed in its current location in the early 19th century, dates back to 1745. It is made of limestone and is designed as a carved pillar with a square-section shaft and a pyramidal cap. The front face, facing south-east, has the inscription: WHITEHALL/ 4/ MILES. The north-east and south-west faces both feature the inscription: ROYAL/ EXCHANGE/ 4 ½/ MILES. The top halves of the three inscribed faces are slightly set back, suggesting they were re-carved in the 19th century and possibly again after the Second World War.
