Description

The building at 28 and 29 Clapham Common South Side is an early to mid-19th century block originally designed as a large mansion intended to visually balance a neighbouring property across the entrance to Crescent Grove. The building is three storeys and has an attic, constructed of stucco. It features four sash windows on the front elevation. The ground floor is rusticated, while the upper floors are divided into bays by full-height pilasters. The first-floor windows have architrave surrounds, friezes, and cornices. The top floor is plain. The building has an entablature, a pediment, and a mansard slate roof with segmentally topped dormers. A stucco balustrade sits above the cornice. A similar architectural treatment is found on the elevation facing Crescent Grove, which has three bays and a round-headed doorway, but lacks a pediment.
