Description

This milestone, built in 1745 by the Surrey & Sussex Turnpike Trust, is made of limestone. It is shaped like a carved pillar with a square shaft and a pyramidal top. The front (east) side features the inscription: ROYAL/ EXCHANGE/ XI/ MILES/ WHITEHALL/ X/ MILES. The north face has remnants of additional inscriptions that are now unreadable, but the date 1745 is still visible.
