Description
The Church of St Lawrence is a parish church located in Morden, built in 1636, possibly incorporating earlier elements. It is constructed of red brick with stone dressings and features a steeply pitched red tiled roof. The church exhibits a late Gothic style, with an aisleless four-bay nave leading to a short chancel and a square three-stage west tower. There is a north vestry added in 1805. The nave has pointed two-light windows with 'Y' tracery, and the east window is a cusped four-light design with later perpendicular tracery. A projecting southwest porch features a pointed arched moulded doorway, which was restored in 1887.
Inside, the church has a plastered and whitewashed interior with a barrel-shaped roof supported by tie beams and king posts. A west gallery was added in 1792. Notable fixtures include original stained and painted glass in the east window, depicting figures of Moses and Aaron with the Tablets of Law, along with tracery lights from 1828. The inlaid timber pulpit, dated 1720, features a sounding board and turned balusters on the stairs. There is also a turned baluster altar rail from the 18th century, hatchments, and wall monuments, including a bust of Peter Leheup Esq, who died in 1777, and the tomb of Sir John Roland, among others.
