Description
Morden Hall is a manor house that now serves as Council offices. It dates from the 18th century, though it may have earlier origins, and has undergone later alterations. The exterior is stuccoed from the mid-19th century, and the roof is not visible. The building is two storeys tall and features a north facade that is nine windows wide, with the central three windows slightly recessed and flanked by a projecting Doric porch with solid sides and a dentil cornice. The windows are square-headed, architraved, and consist of sash frames with plate glass. There is a band between the storeys, a bay window to the left, and two bays at ground floor level. A cornice runs above the first-floor parapet.
Inside, the house retains a large entrance hall that includes a mid-18th century carved wood fireplace. There is also a mid-18th century well staircase with Palladian balustrades and enriched plasterwork on the ceiling. The first-floor landing features bolection moulded panelling, while the drawing room has a modillioned plaster cornice and a two-tier carved wood fireplace. Historically, this house was the manor house of Morden and was long the seat of the Garth family.
