Description

Brockley Court is a large manor or court house, dating from the mid-to-late 17th century, with alterations made in the 18th and 19th centuries. The building is now used as a home for the elderly. It is rendered, with a slate roof behind a coped parapet and ashlar stacks. The house has a T-plan, with a gabled manor house and a wing projecting to the north. There are two storeys and attics, with four steep, coped gables topped with ball finials. The front façade has seven bays including a mixture of glazing-bar sash windows in moulded architraves, and two cross windows to the left, all set beneath a continuous string course on both the ground and first floors. Oval windows in square surrounds, with dripmoulds, are located in the gables. A gabled, projecting porch is positioned off-centre to the left, featuring an ovolo and ogee moulded outer doorway, a sundial above, and a panelled inner door with elaborate strap hinges in a moulded surround. The rear (north) wing has three gables, with four two- and three-light cross windows, all featuring reserved chamfers and dripmoulds. The ground floor room to the west contains stop-chamfered spine beams with run-out stops and a stone fireplace with an ogee and hollow moulding, along with a panelled frieze of circles and ovals, formerly with affixed plates, and a moulded mantelshelf. The ground floor room to the right (east) has moulded raised panels and a fireplace flanked by tall Ionic pilasters; an inset marquetry panel is positioned above the fireplace. A panelled room on the ground floor of the rear wing features an elaborately detailed baroque-style fireplace. The first floor east room on the right side is also panelled, with an arcaded screen.
