Description

This early to mid-19th century terrace comprises a symmetrical composition of two outer pairs of houses and a central group of three. Each house has three storeys and a basement, with two windows apiece, except for the central house, which is three windows wide. The outer, narrower entrance bays of the outer pairs are slightly set back, with similar bays extending from the inner block, and the central house projecting forward. The facades are stuccoed with incised lines, and incorporate a first-floor string course. A stone-coped parapet tops the building. The windows are mostly sash windows with glazing bars; those on the ground and first floors of all but the central house are tripartite, and are set within moulded architraves. Console bracketed cornices are found on the ground floor. A five-step entrance, flanked by side walls, leads to a six-panel door with a cornice head and a rectangular fanlight, all under a heavy bracketed cornice. Ionic pilasters flank the doorway of number 219, although the entablature has been lost. The building is listed partly due to its important position within the streetscape.
