Description

Nos 159 and 161 on Clapham Road are a substantial pair of early 19th century houses, each featuring three storeys and a basement with four windows. The buildings are constructed of painted brick and have a recess on the axis, along with a stucco modified entablature and blocking course. The basement is stuccoed, and the ground floor has a banded design that forms voussoirs to the round-arched openings. On either side of the ground floor, there are wide carriage entrances set in round-arched recesses. The first and second floors have sash windows with glazing bars under gauged brick arches, except for No 159, which has long casements with transoms and margin lights on the first floor. The first floor features console bracketed cornices. Access to the doors, which consist of two long panels with engaged composite columns, is via ten steps, with No 161 having a wrought iron handrail. The doors also have a cornice head that is broken back and a wide patterned fanlight above.
