171 AND 173, CLAPHAM ROAD SW9

Nos 171 and 173 on Clapham Road, dating from the early 19th century, were originally a symmetrical pair but have undergone alterations. No 171 has been reduced to a single two-storey bay, while No 173 retains the main block, which is three storeys tall with a basement and five windows. The buildings are constructed of stock brick, with No 171 featuring a stone-coped parapet and No 173 topped by a fairly low-pitched hipped slate roof with deep eaves soffit. The outer bays of No 173 project slightly and have a ground floor segmental arched recess supported by impost blocks. Both properties have gauged flat brick arches over their sash windows, which include glazing bars. No 173 features a modern central pedimented quasi-Doric porch, while No 171 has an Ionic porch in antis, complete with fluted columns and a dentil cornice, as well as a four-panel door with a cornice head and a patterned fanlight.
