Description

This is a substantial pair of early 19th-century houses located on Clapham Road. Each house is three storeys high with an attic and basement, extended by a one-bay entrance section of three and four storeys respectively. The houses are constructed of stock brick, with a recessed appearance on the central axis. The ground floor is stuccoed, and there is a top cornice; the roof features a stone-coped brick parapet before a slated mansard with dormers. Windows have gauged flat brick arches, and are mostly sash windows with glazing bars. The first floor of number 165 has long casements with transoms. Full-width first-floor balconies are present with patterned cast iron railings. The ground floor is arcaded, with a stucco impost string. Eight steps, with wrought iron handrails, lead to six-panel doors. Flanking engaged Doric columns have outer pilaster responds, fret pattern friezes and wide patterned fanlights; number 163 includes a glazed lampholder.
