Description
No. 135 Clapham Road is a house that began construction in 1821, built by John Lett. It is made of stock brick with stone dressing and features a slate mansard roof. The building has three storeys plus an attic and a basement, with a two-bay plan and a projecting stone porch accessed by stone steps and contemporary railings. There is a later 19th-century extension above and to the left of the carriage entrance. The facade from 1821 includes 12-pane sash windows and an original six-panel door.
Inside, the hall features original skirting and a moulded cornice. An archway supported by paired moulded brackets leads to a lobby with an original cornice. To the right, another archway with a panelled soffit leads to the stair compartment, which retains original newel posts. The ground floor includes a cornice, dividing doors with moulded surrounds, sash windows, and shutters. The first floor has cornices, skirting, and window joinery, while the second floor features box shutters, skirtings, a cornice, and an original 'Greek' fire surround with an iron grate. The attic storey contains original doors and door surrounds, a fire surround with a grate, and window joinery.
This house is part of a speculative development from the 1820s on land owned by Henry Richard Vassal, the third Baron Holland. No. 135 is listed for its group value with Nos. 119, 121, and 127-129 Clapham Road.
