Description
No. 23 Church Street is a house dating from the early 19th century, with origins that trace back to the 15th century. It was altered around 1900. The building is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond and features a hipped slate roof with a brick ridge stack. It has an L-shaped plan and stands two storeys tall.
The entrance consists of a four-panel door located at a canted corner between Well Street and Church Street. This door has panelled reveals, an overlight, and a straight hood. There are shallow bay windows on either side of the entrance, each topped with flat, lead roofs. On the ground floor, to the left on the Well Street elevation, there is a 20-pane sash window with gauged brick and a flat-arched head. The first floor has 16-pane sash windows, except for a blank window above the door that features a round-arched head.
Notably, No. 23 includes a 19th-century cast-iron post box with a crowned VR above the slit. To the far left of the Well Street elevation, there is a one-storey, one-window extension that has a six-panel door with panelled reveals, a thin pilastered wood surround, a serpentine-fronted straight hood, and a 12-pane sash window with a cambered arched head. This house was part of a larger building that included Nos. 21 and 22. The interior has not been inspected but is likely to be of interest.
