Description

No. 119 Clapham Road is a villa completed and occupied in 1821. It is built of stock brick and features a hipped slate roof with stacks on the sides. The building has an L-shaped plan over two storeys, consisting of two rooms on the left and one on the right, with a central staircase. The symmetrical facade includes deep eaves and gauged brick heads above the windows. The first-floor windows have modified sashes without glazing bars and feature shutterboxes underneath. The ground floor originally had full-height casements, of which only fragments and shutterboxes remain. The original four-panel door has had its upper panels replaced with glazing and is set within an attenuated Roman Doric doorcase, of which one wooden column still survives.

The rear elevation has a central staircase window with coloured margin-light glazing. Inside, the entrance hall includes a mutule cornice, while other areas feature richly moulded cornices and architraves with beads and deep grooves, characteristic of the Soanic style from the 1820s, as developed by a skilled but anonymous local builder. The staircase is notable for its sinuous mahogany handrail and stick balusters, along with skirtings, cornices, and architrave window and door surrounds that exemplify late Georgian domestic joinery. There are also fragments of a fireplace in a bedroom and some dado panelling in what is now a bathroom. This villa is included as an early example of the Italianate style, contrasting with the terraced development typical of South London, and is recognized for the quality of its internal joinery.
