Description
No. 22 Kenilworth Road is a villa, built around 1836 to 1850, and later altered to become two separate dwellings. The exterior is constructed of pinkish-brown brick, with a painted stucco facade on the front, brick and stucco chimney stacks, a Welsh slate roof, and a cast-iron verandah.
The villa is two storeys high with three windows on the first floor. It features alternating rusticated quoins and a plinth. The first floor has a moulded band and contains 1/1 sash windows with margin lights in plain reveals, sills, blind boxes, and Venetian blinds. The ground floor shows three roll-edged stone steps leading to a central entrance with a four-panel, part-glazed door and a basket-arched overlight, set within a hollow-chamfered surround with a moulded architrave. Flanking this are tripartite windows with a central 1/1 sash with margin lights flanked by narrower 1/1 sashes with upper and lower lights, all set in double-chamfered reveals with cambered arches. A modillion cornice runs along the top. The roof is hipped, with a tall stack to the left side featuring a cornice, and a rear stack. A continuous verandah with a scroll motif to the uprights runs along the ground floor.
The interior was not inspected during the listing process.
Kenilworth Road was developed between 1834 and 1838. Numbers 20, 22, 26, 28, 30, 36, 38 and 46 form a group of villas demonstrating a similar architectural style.
