Description

No. 14 Stratton Terrace is a suburban villa built in the early 19th century, with a date of 1826 noted on a sign. The building features stucco on rubble with a plinth, and it has an original grouted scantle slate roof with projecting eaves, along with brick end and axial stacks. The villa has a double-depth plan with the main rooms situated under an L-plan roof. It is two storeys high and has a symmetrical three-window garden front facing the road, as well as a symmetrical three-window entrance front on the left-hand return.

The exterior includes end pilasters with floral decoration and an anthemion band at mid-floor. The original hornless sash windows, which have glazing bars, are taller on the ground floor. A central distyle porch features an egg and dart cornice, margin pane glazing, and scalloped glazing in the overlights, along with an original six-panel door.

Inside, the villa retains many original features of interest, including an open-well open-string staircase with a mahogany handrail that is scrolled over the newel. The vestibule has a guilloche cornice, and the stair hall features an egg and dart cornice. There are columns flanking the entrance to the principal reception room, and panelled doors within moulded architraves. Although other parts of the house were not inspected, it is said that they retain similar features in the principal rooms. This villa is part of a notable group of 19th-century villas.
