Description

Goodwinds is an early 19th century Catholic church, now converted into two houses. It was originally designed to resemble a suburban villa. The exterior is incised stucco on rubble, with an asbestos slate hipped roof and three brick stacks. The building has a double-depth plan, with a service wing extended in the 20th century. It is two storeys high, and features a three-bay entrance front and road front. The road front has a central half-dome-headed niche containing a statue of the Virgin Mary, flanked by two-storey bowed bays. A mid-floor string course, guttae (small, decorative projections) under the windows, and a parapet cornice are also present. The original windows are 12-pane hornless sashes. The left-hand return front is a three-window design with a central distyle Doric entrance porch, also featuring guttae to the entablature, and retains its original panelled door. A two-window range on the left of the entrance front also has original bowed sashes. Inside, many original features remain, including an open-well, open-string staircase, moulded and carved ceiling cornices, panelled doors within moulded architraves, and panelled window shutters. The design was intended to complement other 19th-century villas in the area.
