Description
No. 43 Portland Street is a villa built around 1830, featuring ashlar stonework over a brick structure, with the sides painted. It has a concealed roof and a brick stack on the right. The building stands two storeys above a basement and has a pedimented three-window facade. Ionic pilasters extend through both floors, complemented by an entablature and pediment. The ground-floor windows are framed by horizontal rustication that leads into voussoirs, while the first-floor windows have bands above them. The central entrance is framed by Tuscan pilasters and includes an architrave, frieze, and cornice, leading to a four-panel door flanked by sidelights and an overlight with lattice glazing bars and margin-lights. The villa features 1/1 replacement sash windows throughout, with the first-floor windows having tooled architraves. Inside, there is a dogleg staircase with alternating stick and embellished balusters and a wreathed handrail, along with some remaining plasterwork in the hall. This villa is likely depicted on Merrett's 1834 map, showcasing its fine pedimented temple front.
