Description

Bordeaux House (Number 105) and Sussex House (Number 107) are a pair of terraced houses built around 1820 to 1850, located on Winchcombe Street in Cheltenham. The buildings feature ashlar stonework over brick, with the ground floor stuccoed. They have concealed roofs and wrought-iron balconies and railings. The design includes a double depth plan with hallways on the right side.

The exterior showcases ashlar details such as bands at the ground, first, and second floors, a crowning frieze, and a modillion cornice. The ground and first floors have 6/6 sash windows, with the first floor windows being taller. The second floor and basement feature 3/6 sash windows, all set in plain reveals with sills. The entrances on the right have flights of roll-edged steps leading to porches supported by two Doric columns and engaged pilasters. Above these porches is a round-arched frieze with a central keystone and shaped panels in the spandrels, topped with a cornice. The porches contain 6-panel doors, with the right door now partially glazed, and fanlights featuring circle and batwing glazing bars.

Inside, the houses retain original joinery, including panelled shutters, although the interior was not fully inspected. Notable subsidiary features include individual balconies at the first-floor windows, embellished rods on the balconies over the porches, and latticework friezes. The forecourt is enclosed by arrowhead railings, with additional railings on the sides of the steps and gates, topped with urn finials on the stanchions.
