Description

Bilbrook House is a pair of semi-detached houses, built around 1831-1832, situated on Winchcombe Street in Cheltenham and incorporating number 1 Clarence Road. The design was likely by John Forbes or WA Watson. The houses are constructed with stucco over brickwork, feature concealed roofs, and have tall stuccoed party-wall stacks. They are built in a Gothic style.

The facade facing Winchcombe Street has two storeys and a basement, with a five-bay arrangement on the first floor, and a two-bay section that projects forward on the right. Stucco detailing includes hood moulds with label stops over most windows, a moulded crowning cornice, and battlements. The windows are primarily 6/6 sash windows with pointed panes in square heads; one window is a 2/2 horizontal-pane sash. A French window is positioned above the entrance door on the left projection. The entrance to the left projection has a 4-panel, part-glazed door, while the entrance to the right has a panelled door. The return facade to the right has two windows per floor, with 6/6 and 1/1 sash windows and hood moulds with label stops. The Clarence Road facade has two storeys and a basement, with a 1-4-1 window arrangement, the window to the left is in a recessed two-storey entrance bay, and the window to the right is recessed. Mainly 6/6 sash windows with hood moulds are present, with one blind window to the first floor on the left. The crowning cornice and crenellations complete the facade. A panelled door is located in a solid crenellated porch on the right.

The interior of the houses has not been inspected.

The attached railings incorporate arrowhead detailing. These houses were built as part of a broader development dating from 1825 to 1842, commissioned for Joseph Pitt, with the general layout designed by architect John Forbes. They represent a good example of Classical articulation combined with Regency Gothic features and form a group with numbers 2-7 Clarence Road.
