Description

A villa and attached railings, dating from approximately 1820 to 1850. The villa is constructed of stucco over brick, with a concealed roof and an iron porch. It is two storeys high with a basement, featuring three windows on the first floor. The end bays project forward and are topped with pediments, with stacks rising above. The stucco detailing includes wide end pilasters to the ground floor, surmounted by a continuous deep frieze with elliptical arches creating recesses over the windows. A continuous sill band runs along the first floor, and the forward-projecting bays have Doric pilasters and a continuous frieze and entablature. The windows are 6/6 sash windows with plain reveals, and sills to the ground floor. The basement has 3/6 sash windows. A flight of steps leads to a central entrance with double 6-panel doors and an overlight with margin lights. The left return has three first-floor windows and similar stucco detailing, though without the pedimented breakforwards, with 6/6 sash windows, taller on the ground floor. The interior retains original joinery, including panelled shutters. The porch features ornate scrolled hearts to the uprights and frieze, while the railings to the sides of the steps have a scrolled lozenge motif. The villa occupies an important corner site and is part of a group that continues to Nos 1-7 Clarence Road.
