Description

A villa with attached railings, built around 1834 to 1838, and later altered, including the addition of a single-storey rear range in the 1970s. The villa is stucco over brick with a concealed roof, a stucco stack on the left end, and iron railings. It has two main floors above a basement, with three first-floor windows, and a lower two-storey service range at the rear. The stucco detailing includes a plinth topped with Doric pilasters at the ends and fluted Ionic pilasters at the first floor on a central projection. The ground floor has horizontal rustication, while the first floor has a tooled band. Windows have tooled architraves; those on the first floor have sills on feet and cornices on console brackets, with a pediment on consoles above the central window. A flight of six roll-edged steps leads to a central entrance with a four-fielded-panel door and overlight with margin glazing bars, set within a distyle Doric porch featuring engaged pilasters, an architrave with a frieze of wreaths, a cornice and a blocking course. The ground floor windows are tall 8/8 sashes. First-floor windows are 6/6 sashes, with some blind boxes remaining. Basement windows are 4/8 sashes. The rear retains some 6/6 and 8/8 sashes. Attic dormers have late 20th-century casement windows. The interior has not been inspected. The railings on the sides of the steps have scrolled rods. The surrounding parkland was laid out in 1833 and briefly housed a zoological garden in the mid-19th century. The estate's development continued after Samuel Daukes purchased it in 1839 and was influenced by earlier London schemes.
