Description

Camden Lodge is a villa built around 1827-1834, with later 19th-century additions and alterations. It was likely designed by either John Forbes or W.A. Watson, architects. The building features a stucco exterior over brick and has a slate roof, with tall lateral stucco stacks topped with cornices. The villa is two storeys high and has a basement, with the main two-window range on the first floor and a service range set back to the left.

Access to the entrance is via a flight of steps leading to an off-centre entrance, which consists of a part-glazed door and overlight with margin-lights, all framed by a fluted distyle Ionic porch that includes an architrave, frieze, and cornice. The porch is glazed on the sides with plate-glass windows featuring margin-lights. Above the porch is an 8-pane French window with a divided overlight, while the other windows are 1/1 sashes set within tooled architraves. The ground floor windows have panelled aprons, friezes, and cornices supported by console brackets, and there is a canted bay window on the left range. A crowning frieze, cornice, and low parapet with copings extend around the building.

On the right return facing Evesham Road, the villa again has two storeys over a basement, featuring three first-floor windows. The 1/1 sashes are also in tooled architraves, with ground floor windows displaying friezes and cornices on console brackets and decorative panelled aprons. The basement windows are 3/3 sashes.

The railings on either side of the steps have embellished rod balusters. Camden Lodge was constructed as part of the development of the area by Joseph Pitt between 1825 and 1842, with the overall layout designed by architect John Forbes. The villa occupies a significant corner site at the junction with Evesham Road.
