Description
Camden House is a villa built between 1834 and 1835, featuring stucco over brick with a flat-topped hipped slate roof and end stucco stacks. The building has two storeys above a basement and includes three first-floor windows, with a service range set back to the right. The first floor has six-over-six sash windows, while the ground floor has one-over-one sash windows; the two windows on the right have blind boxes. All windows have plain reveals and sills. The central entrance is framed by a distyle mutular Doric porch that includes triglyphs and metopes, with a frieze, cornice, and blocking course above. The stacks are incorporated into a raised parapet.
On the garden facade facing west towards Clarence Square, there is a three-window range. The first floor features six-over-six sashes set in tooled architraves, while the ground floor has one-over-one sashes and a Victorian bay with tripartite one-over-one sashes. An attic is located to the north. The interior retains original joinery, including shutters. Additional features include window guards on the ground floor of the west facade and blind boxes to the right of the main facade.
Historically, Camden House was built as part of the development of the area by Joseph Pitt between 1825 and 1842, with the general layout designed by architect John Forbes. Clarence Square was laid out in the late 1820s, with construction beginning in 1832. This house served as the vicarage for the Church of the Holy Trinity on Portland Street. The Square is named after the Duke of Clarence, who became King William IV in 1830. Camden House occupies a corner site at the junction of Clarence Square and Clarence Road.
