Description
Camden Villa is a villa built in 1834, likely designed by the architect Robert Stokes. The building features ashlar stonework, which is now covered in stucco, over a brick structure with a concealed roof and ashlar end stacks. It has two storeys above a basement, with attics in the gables and three first-floor windows. The ground floor exhibits horizontal rustication that extends into voussoirs above the windows, along with a first-floor band, architrave, frieze, cornice, and blocking course. The first floor has 6/6 sash windows set in plain reveals with sills, while the ground floor contains outer tripartite 1/1 sashes with cambered heads, and the basement features 6/6 sashes. A flight of roll-edged steps leads to the central entrance, which consists of a four-panel, part-glazed door flanked by side-lights and topped with a cambered overlight with margin glazing. This entrance is sheltered by a distyle Doric porch that includes triglyphs and metopes, as well as guttae on the cornice and a blocking course. The right return of the building has 1/1 and two 6/6 sashes (one located in the attic), while other openings are blind. The interior has not been inspected. Historically, Camden Villa was part of a development initiated by Joseph Pitt between 1825 and 1842, with the overall layout designed by architect John Forbes. In 1851, the house was sold to William, Earl Fitzhardinge of Berkeley Castle for £1,000, serving as his residence in Cheltenham and a home for his mistress, Jane Barker.
