Description

Clarence Court, consisting of numbers 8, 9, and 10, is a terrace of three houses that have been converted into flats. Built between 1833 and 1835, it is likely the work of architect Robert Stokes, with some later additions and alterations, including an attic storey and 20th-century extensions at the rear. The building features stucco over brick and has a hipped artificial slate roof, along with iron railings.

The exterior is two storeys high with attics and has seven first-floor windows arranged in a pattern of two, three, and two. The stucco detailing includes horizontal rustication on the ground floor, which is accentuated by voussoirs over the openings, as well as a first-floor band, frieze, cornice, and blocking course. The first floor has 6/6 sash windows, while the ground floor features 1/1 sash windows, all set in plain reveals with sills. The basements also have 1/1 sash windows. There are flights of roll-edged steps leading to the entrances, which have four- and six-panel doors with raised and fielded upper panels and flush lower panels, some with overlights and margin-lights. The attics are concealed behind a parapet.

On the right return, there are two first-floor windows with similar stucco detailing and fenestration. The interior has not been inspected. The railings beside the steps feature a scrolled lozenge motif and stick balusters with ornate panels and wreathed handrails, while the rest of the railings have an arrowhead design.

Historically, Clarence Court was built as part of the development of the area by Joseph Pitt between 1825 and 1842, with the general layout designed by architect John Forbes.
