Description

The entrance gateway to Pittville Park, dating from approximately 1830 to 1840, comprises six ashlar piers. These piers sit on plinths and have moulded caps, rising to a height of about 2 meters; the four outer piers are surmounted by lamps. The central iron gates feature three levels of rails, with fleurs-de-lys motifs on the middle bars and spearheads on the upper bars. An overthrow displays a coat-of-arms, the name Pittville Park, and ornately scrolled cresting. The outer gates are currently missing. The development of Pittville was initiated for Joseph Pitt between 1825 and 1842, with the general layout designed by the architect John Forbes. The gateway forms a notable feature within the streetscape.
