Description

Numbers 6 to 14 and the attached railings to number 8 form a terrace of single and two-paired quasi semi-detached villas, with number 12 and 14 now operating as a nursing home. These villas were constructed around 1848 as part of the Pittville Estate, which had been divided into lots and sold to builders after 1845. Originally known as 1 to 5 Clarendon Villas, they contribute to a significant architectural group along Pittville Lawn.

The villas are built of stucco over brickwork and have hipped slate roofs. Brick and stucco party walls and iron railings and balconies are also present. The west-facing elevation is two storeys high with basements, and features a varied arrangement of windows: 3 windows on the first floor, followed by a two-storey, single-window range, then two entrances of single storey, then a two-storey, two-window range. The window arrangement is 3:6:2:6:1. A tall pilaster with a sunk panel sits between the paired houses. The first floor has 6/6 sash windows throughout. Ground floor windows are primarily 2/2 horizontal-pane sashes; the centre of the paired houses have tripartite sashes, and the left side features 6-pane French windows with overlights, flanked by 2/2 sashes. Basement windows are 3/6 and 4/8 sashes, all set in simple reveals. The entrances have 4-panel doors, some part-glazed with overlights. The detailing includes tooled architraves to windows, with cornices on console brackets to the ground floor, and a first-floor band acting as a raised cornice with dentils over the paired entrances. Wide eaves are present. The interior was not inspected.

Subsidiary features include continuous balconies to the ground floor with ornate rods and scrolls, and spearhead forecourt railings to number 8.
