Description
This is a house, likely built between 1820 and 1850, located on Winchcombe Street in Cheltenham. It’s constructed with a stucco exterior over brick, featuring concealed roof and brick end stacks. Architectural details include tooled architraves around ground-floor and first-floor windows, horizontal bands on the facade, fielded panels below the second-floor windows, a moulded band, and a modillion cornice. The first floor contains French windows with stained-glass overlights, and other windows are 1/1 sash windows with horns, all set in plain reveals with sills; the ground and first-floor sills are wide and supported by brackets. A basement has a 3/3 sash window and a 6-panel door with an overlight. A nine-step entrance leads to a distyle Ionic porch with a pulvinated frieze and a modillion cornice, housing a panelled door with sidelights. The basement also includes a 3/3 sash window and a 6-panel door with an overlight. The interior of the building has not been inspected. Iron window boxes with rails and scrolls are present on the ground and first floors. Attached to the building are arrowhead-shaped area railings, railings to the sides of the steps, and urn finials to the stanchions. The sculptor Auguste Rodin resided here in 1915 and 1916.
