Description
Christ Church, built in 1907 by Beresford Pite, is a Grade II* listed building located on Brixton Road. It is designed in a Byzantine style and features a cruciform layout with a central dome over a wider octagonal drum. The church has a low nave with a half-octagonal west end, tall gabled transepts, and a long chancel that leads to a wide east end. The exterior is constructed of yellow stock brick, accented with purple dressings of red brick and stone. There is extensive arcading on all sides, and the large lunettes of the drum and transepts are enhanced by wide, buttress-like mullions that add an Art Nouveau touch. The impressive east end includes a tall, domed central tower, lower end towers with gambrel roofs, and a southeast angle turret topped with a copper ogee canopy. The stone dressings on the east facade include first-floor arcading and three doorways below, with the central doorway situated under a raised pediment.
