Description
The tomb of Dr. Gideon Mantell is a pedestal monument located in West Norwood Memorial Park, dating from around 1852 and possibly designed by Amon Henry Wilds of Brighton. It is made of white marble and features a rectangular plan with a battered pediment, coved base, and cornice, all of which are inscribed. The tomb is set within decorative cast iron railings and is placed asymmetrically to include a cypress tree. Dr. Gideon Algernon Mantell was a surgeon, geologist, and paleontologist, known for discovering the iguanodon alongside Mrs. Mantell.
