Description

The tomb of Captain John Wimble, located in West Norwood Memorial Park, is a chest tomb dating from around 1851, with the designer unknown. It is made of stone and features a rectangular shape with an enriched, stepped base. The base has a thick band of carved ship's rope moulding and supports the tomb, which is adorned with paired clasping pilasters that have palmette capitals at the corners. These pilasters support a coved cornice decorated with acanthus enrichment. The stepped top of the tomb is surmounted by a sculptured dismasted merchant ship.

Three side panels display high-quality relief carvings of ships at sea, with two depicted in violent storms. The inscriptions on the panels read: "Ship Maidstone off St. Helena 24 March 1840," "Ship London off Gangan 6th October 1832," and "Ship Florentinia off the Cape 21 June 1825." Captain Wimble spent 34 years at sea before his retirement.
