Description
The Tomb of Lucy Gallup, located in West Norwood Memorial Park, is a pedestal monument with a figure, dating from around 1883, designed by an unknown architect. It is made of grey and pink granite, featuring a marble figure. The tomb has a square, stepped plinth that includes an inset circular photograph of Lucy Gallup and her prominently inscribed name. This plinth supports a pink granite column, with grey Egyptian columns positioned at the corners. At the top, there is a sculptured marble portrait figure of Lucy Gallup dressed in classical robes, with her right hand pointing heavenwards and her left hand holding a chaplet. This monument is notable as an early English example of incorporating photographs of the deceased alongside a portrait figure. The Gallup family, of American origin, had connections to the founder of the Gallup public opinion poll.
