Description
The tomb of Thomas de La Garde Grissell, located in West Norwood Memorial Park, is a chest tomb dating from around 1847, with the designer unknown. It is constructed from cast iron, stucco, and pink granite. The tomb features a rectangular stepped base with mitred corners, which has pedestals supporting pilasters adorned with Gothic aedicules. These are topped with cast figures of standing angels. The pilasters flank pointed, cusped openings that are filled with pink granite slabs, some of which are inscribed. The structure has an enriched, coved cornice at the flat top with moulded edges. It stands on a large stone platform, which is now badly broken but was originally surrounded by good Gothic wrought iron railings. Thomas de La Garde Grissell was a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries.
