Description

The tomb of Elizabeth King, located in West Norwood Memorial Park, is a figurative monument created around 1922. It was inspired by the Oneto monument from 1878, designed by Giulio Monteverde in the Staglieno Cemetery, Genoa, although the sculptor of this particular monument is unknown. The tomb features a marble figure set on a rough-hewn granite base. The base is square and stepped, with a smoothed panel that is inscribed with the words "Waiting/I Cor.I.7." At the back, there is a rough-hewn headstone with canted, smoothed panels. In front of this headstone stands a larger-than-life-size sculpted adolescent angel of notable quality, depicted just before sounding the Last Trump. The angel is dressed in a simple, form-fitting garment and stands on the right foot with the left leg crossed over. The arms are crossed, with the left hand resting lightly on the shoulder and the right hand holding a long trumpet, the forefinger positioned on the mouthpiece. The angel's ringlets, secured by a headband, frame a face filled with character, while large wings curve forward around the body.
